2.06 No Exit

My feelings on this episode.  Behind a cut for spoilers.

General:
This was a genuinely scary episode!  I was totally creeped out while watching it, and also creeped out when I turned my light off and got into bed.  I was so scared someone was watching me from inside my walls, lol.  Some of the writing could have been better, though.  I think Kripke was slacking a little in this episode... Actually what I think is that he was trying so hard to give Alona Tal some face time that he wasn't as focused on whether Sam or Dean would actually say or do that, you know?  And what is it that made Jensen backing up a cement truck so effing hot?

What I liked:
Aside from Jensen backing up that cement truck, and the fact that the episode was really scary, I can't say enough how much I appreciate that we have an episode that touches on SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE DAMN DEMON.  I realize it's a major story arc and there are still tons of things left to cover, but the show is 'Supernatural,' let's see more than one supernatural creature, yes?  I really liked that there is finally something else to hunt, something else going on.  Something scary - the Demon is not that frightening.  I really miss the horror movie every week premise, and Kripke's commitment to historical and legendary accuracy.

I also liked the moment when Dean is on the phone with Ellen, but face-to-face with Jo and they're snarking at each other over whether or not he's going to tell Ellen that Jo is there.  It was quite cute.  Also this quick exchange:

Jo: So are you going to buy me dinner?
Dean: What are you talking about?
Jo: Well if you're going to ride me so close, it's only decent that you buy me dinner.

Furthermore, I like the relationship that we're getting between them.  I don't know whether it's intentional, but I definately don't feel any sexual or romantic chemistry between the two of them.  I feel big-brother-littlle-sister chemistry.  Is that how Kripke's writing it in response to the Jo-blacklash?  Or is that just how Jensen is playing it?  All I know is if at any point there is an argument and then suddenly throw-me-against-the-wall-and-kiss-me scene, I will gag, because not only is that such an effing cliche, but kinda gross as she seems so much younger than he does (as many people have pointed out).

And wouldn't you be pissed if you were Dean and woke up in that position on the sofa, only to find that Jo hadn't even slept in the bed (to say nothing of the fact that she's clearly got an obsession with you, and was sitting up all night at the table, likely watching you sleep)?

Finally, although Jo's little soliloquy about wanting to do the job for her dad was obnoxious, Dean looked pretty amazing in that scene.  Kudos to the lighting director, and to Jensen for making his eyes look so intense.

The actor who played H.H. Holmes did an amazing job.  He was really scary, and seemed genuinely insane.  Good work.

The tension on the ride back home?  Very nice ^.^

What I Didn't Like:
Obviously, I am a Jo-hater.  I think she ruins the entire dynamic, even as a little sister-type character.  I don't like her there, but at least her acting was better in this episode.

That said, the scene where she comes to inside the box and is talking to Theresa, trying to calm her down, she's way overacting.  Too much, Alona.  Calm it down a little.

I think my bigget pet peeve about this episode is the fact that the boys (plus Jo) didn't go to the library and get a list of the men hanged in the vacant lot themselves.  Did they really need Ash to do that?

That said, I hated, HATED the ending scene.  I was impressed that it was a scenario I haven't seen anyone guess, but Jo was obnoxious and immature in her whining, and I also think that Dean wouldn't have reacted that way.  He worshipped his father, and he knew his father always worked alone, and never made mistakes.  That's what we've come to believe and even if it's not completely accurate, I don't believe that Dean would so easily accept the fact that John had a partner, or that he got him killed.

If I were a Sam girl, I would be really disappointed in this episode, though.  Guess Jared needed a break.

Although they were very historically accurate with the H.H. Holmes info they gave us, they had to clean it up substantially for TV.  The things he did were actually way more twisted and nauseating.  Here's a good source, if you're interested.
