learned something about LJ today

I just learned, and thought I should pass on to other graphics makers, that there are people picking up the LJ picture feed (didn't know about that either? yeah.  me too.) to pirate your graphics for reposting in mass, without credit, for their skeezy friends to take.  It also steals your bandwidth.  Every single photo that's posted, whether it's an icon batch, or a photo of your and you baby just home from the hospital, goes onto the feed for anyone to tap into.  One of the jerks stealing off of the feed is iconscraper (he's probably psyched about all the attention he's been getting, to tell you the truth). The good news is that there's a way to block your journal or community from getting onto the feed.

1. Open up adminconsole. http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/
2. For personal Journals, copy/paste the following: set latest_optout yes
3. For communities, copy/paste the following: set "for" COMMUNITYNAME latest_optout yes (where it says COMMUNITYNAME, delete that and type in the name of your community)

Some people don't care that people can take their work and not credit, repost anywhere they like etc.  There's obviously no way to keep some jerk who wants to take your icons and put them on Xanga or use as a userpic and not credit from doing that.  But we can at least keep this guy, and others, from enabling the rest of the jerk population.

PS - Sorry for spamming everyone's F-lists.  I crossposted this at every graphics community I'm a member of.

Wow! Thanks for posting! I don't post much, but is good to know! And curious if we did it right there's like a grid at the top with 'set' in one square, 'latest_optout' in the next one and 'yes' in the last square. Sorry, I'm not very good with computers.

It just really annoyed me that this guy would do that. I mean, sure, anyone who looks at your graphics post can do whatever they want to with your stuff and you have no way of stopping them, but most people have respect. If your art is up on his posts, the people looking at it are people who have no respect for the time you put into your work, and they're a lot more likely to do mean things. It's just without manners, and I hate rude people. It's so uncalled for. I feel like people in most fandoms are good, respectful and respectable people. We follow the rules that we implement.

It just doesn't make sense to be a dick.

Okay - so you click on the link, and you're at the administration console. There's a big white field to type in. For your personal journal, here's what you type:


set latest_optout yes

If your own a community, say it's named IxLovexDean, here is what you would type:

set "for" IxLovexDean latest_optout yes


Then click the execute button, and you're all set. Is that more clear? Let me know, k?

That's what I was told. That's what I did, and I haven't seen anything I've posted on that particular dick's journal.

And you're welcome to everyone - keep spreading the word! Let everyone know what'd going on, and then eventually guys like that will have nothing to post and will have to close down.

heh, i think thanks to you that guys community or whatever it was has been suspended. I tried to go there to see if any of my stuff had been taken, but i got an error message saying that user had been suspended.

So just wanted to say thanks for the info AND getting him banned. :D
