eye color tutorial
I'm alive! And writing tutorials!
So I saw this gorgeous banner by
antonella87 and decided I wanted to attempt to duplicate it, since I'm a bit rusty on my graphics-making. And in the process of selecting a photo of Kristen Stewart I wanted to use, I discovered that I had once learned how to change eye color, but had forgotten. So I searched in vain for a tutorial, couldn't find one, figured out how to do it on my own, and decided to write a tutorial so you fine people don't have to do the same thing :)
I've already colored my photo, since I'm planning on using it for something else, but this tutorial does not involve selective coloring. It does use the magnetic lasso tool, and I'm not sure if that's available in PSP. Also color balance. And that's it! Easy peasy!

Okay. So we're starting out with our original image, which is provided by lionandlamblove.org, It's huge, so I'm zoomed in to 200% so I can actually see her eyes. Kristen Stewart has green eyes, while the character of Bella from Twilight has brown eyes. So the first time we're going to do is use the magnetic lasso tool to select only the irises of her eyes to change color on.
Step One: Select the magnetic lasso tool from the tool pallette. It's on the left side near the top, the lasso-y thing with a magnet :) The way this tool works is once you click on a starting point, it finds surrounding pixels with the same color information and selects them. It can go a little crazy sometimes though, so keep clicking on points to keep the tool going where you want it to. See a screencap.
Note: If you have already colored your image, as you can see I have in the screencap, you need to make sure you are doing this on the original image layer, under the selective coloring layers. Or it will look strange :) See my layers pallette in the above screencap.
Step Two: When you have worked your way back to your starting point, the area will turn into a selection. See a screencap. Go up to the menu bar and select Image > Adjust > Color Balance. A new window will open up.
Now, since Kristen's eye is green and we want to turn it brown, we'll want to move the settings away from cyan, green and blue. Start with the Shadows radio button selected, and then adjust on all three levels until you find settings you are satisfied with. The numbers are really not that important since when we do this on her other eye, we will not be using the same ones. When you're done, click OK.
Now we have one brown eye and one green. See a screencap.
Step Three: Repeat steps one and two on the other eye. Even if you tried to use the same color balance settings from the other eye, it's still not going to look exactly the same since the eyes are not exactly the same color to start with. You just have to look at both and do your best to make them match. I zoomed out a little so I could look at both eyes as I adjusted the second one. See a screencap.
All that's left is to flatten your layers and save! This technique would also be helpful if you were turning someone into a Twilight-esque vampire - eye color is so easy to change now! You can give them golden vegetarian eyes or red nomad eyes in two and a half simple steps. Final product.
Was this tutorial helpful? Got questions? Comment away, I'm happy to help!
