i am a design whore.
The fact that I'm in love with the movie Practical Magic is no secret. I love love LOVE it. And I also love weheartit.com. I love to pick out images I generally like and then try to make graphics with them, but as much as that, I love to find home or decor ideas I like and save them, and then print them out and put them in my wish book. Sadly, my physical wish book has been packed and missing since my move to my parents' house, but I have been saving and preparing all kinds of things to be placed in it as soon as it is recovered.
Since I haven't had it to place items I like in it immediately, I have been saving all these photos in one huge file on my computer, and seeing them all sitting next to one another instead of on their own individual pages made me realize something - everything I love resembles the set design from Practical Magic. I definitely have a style. And then, Mom and I went to an antique mall and I fell in love with this gold, drippy Victorian mirror that I would have thought was too ornate for me... but would fit beautifully in the Practical Magic parlor.
And that's where it started. Since then, my eyes have been open to all kinds of things that I love and have collected for my future house, and I can't wait to have it so I can put all my beautiful things in it! And I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Visa company, for fronting me the money for all of this stuff, since they're not gonna see it back until I can become gainfully employed. So thanks ;)
These are photos of one of the Practical Magic sets. Although it looks a little dark, I love how it really makes the house feel old and lived in, cozy. All the fabrics look so soft and warm and used. I'm also loving the greens, browns, and blacks all working together. In the second photo, notice the twisty legs on the piano, which I think are gorgeous - I have two lamps just like that. I also housesat for someone last month who had a table like that, which I took a photo of for my book, and had no idea there was anything like that in the Practical Magic room. Like I said, I have definite taste and didn't even know it, lol. Another thing I love about this room is the dark wood detail around the doors and windows. Dark wood is one of my favorite things, and heavy, detailed mouldings are another of my favorite things. Something I want to do but haven't gotten around to yet is copy the pressed leaves on the wall in the second photo.
So, with these ideas in mind, I purchased the following collection of items:
First, is the mirror I bought for a quite reasonable price at the Payne Mill Antique Mall in Payne City. I really love how there's not too much drippy gold, and my favorite part is the smoky, old patina. That's what sold me on it.
I also bought a slightly small-scale carved fireplace mantle that I plan on doing this with:
Next, the throw pillows. I have some pillows that are similar to this, but they're red and gold and they look a little more mediterranean in style. These look soft and old and calming. I love them so much. They came from Marshall's.
Pictures and frames. The brown one came from Big Lots, the black one from Marshalls (I'm in LOVE with this one), and the little silver one I already had. That's my grandmother inside it. And I already had the antique bookmark with the victorian lady on it. I'm thinking I might paint the brown and silver frames black. Thoughts?
This school picture was also something I had. My cousin and I bought it and another one at a yard sale in the mountains a million years ago and had been keeping it in the cabin. Last time I was there I swiped it, but don't tell her, haha :)
The glassware. Oh, the glassware. I had wanted some apothecary jars forEVER, but never justified what I would do with them. Then I saw them on clearance at Marshall's and walked away one more time before I had to drive all the way back out there and get them. Thankfully, they were still there :) I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with them, maybe plant terrariums in them both. The same with the glass hurricane that I flipped over for this picture - I had originally thought about putting a candle in it and putting it on the mantle, which I may still do, but then I also thought I could flip it over and call it a cloche (a bell jar). I've been looking at cloches (because I want to do this), and they are not cheap. So I may just make one out of this $5.99 hurricane from Marshall's.
Finally, it's my redhead painting. This is from the 60s I think, and it came from my great-grandmother's house. My mother has some more art that I think I might steal because I really want a lot of oil portraits. I don't have any fancy portraits of my ancestors, like these:
so I'm going to have to find some of other people's ancestors on the cheap and buy them.
I think that my obsession with buying home decor items helps me to not get depressed that I have no job and no place to live. I should be grateful that I have parents who welcomed me back with open arms. And I am. But it's just depressing to not be able to support myself. I want my own place so much!!!
