The first time I read it I did all right. I'm re-reading it now and I keep crying every 10 pages or so, but I know that it's really beautiful in the second half. You really should try again. I don't know how it will translate to film, though.
If you really want to read something sad, Alice Sebold's memoir, "Lucky," will absolutely turn your stomach. And you'll never want to look at a man again. So maybe for a really sunny day in at the beach or something ^.^
